San Giovanni in Laterano is Rome's cathedral (yes, not St. Peter's!) and the first of the papal basilicas. Free entry. Inside: colossal statues of the apostles on the naves, gilded wooden ceiling, and the cosmatesque cloister (this one has a small fee but it's worth it). Across from the basilica, on the other side of the square, there's the Scala Santa, said to be the staircase Jesus climbed in Pilate's house — the faithful climb it on their knees (free).
