St. John Lateran — Rome's cathedral

Rome's official cathedral, even before St. Peter's.

Roma Centro · Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, Roma1 hGratisMorning or sunset

Di cosa si tratta

San Giovanni in Laterano is Rome's cathedral (yes, not St. Peter's!) and the first of the papal basilicas. Free entry. Inside: colossal statues of the apostles in the aisles, gilded wooden ceiling, and the cosmatesque cloister (this one has a small fee but it's worth it). Across from the basilica, on the other side of the piazza, there's the Scala Santa, which tradition says is the staircase Jesus climbed in Pontius Pilate's house — the faithful climb it on their knees (free).
