Testaccio Market is one of Rome's historic markets, today in a modern covered structure but with the soul of a working-class neighbourhood. Great for shopping (fruit, vegetables, cheese, fish, meat — payment required) but also just to wander around. Don't miss: 'Mordi e Vai' (box 15), which makes stuffed panini with stew, alla parmigiana or tripe (5-6€ — not free but affordable). The atmosphere, the voices, the prices: that's truly free. Open Monday to Saturday until 3pm.
